The DNL file extension is created by the software Desktop Author. All documents created by Desktop Author have .dnl extensions whether they be eBooks, eCards, eCatalogs or eBrochures. Although these documents can only be opened by Desktop Author, they may be viewed by anyone using the free Digital WebBook plugin that is provided at no cost by Desktop Author. It is similar to how Adobe Acrobat Reader many view .PDF files, although Adobe Acrobat is needed to edit or modify them.

My computer was always popping up with registry errors and I couldnt get rid of them. Regtask did the job for me and took less then 5 minutes to speed up my computer.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.
David G.
My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

.DNL files are created only by Desktop Author, and as Desktop Author is not a widely used program they are not too widely encountered. In fact, since Desktop Author allows the user to create their eBook as a stand alone executable file (with the extension .exe), even those who do use Desktop Author tend to not leave their applications as .dnl files. In general, .dnl files are encountered by users who inherit old data created by Desktop Author or by aging eBooks uploaded to the web a long time ago. Desktop Author was first developed in 1999 and as such it is not widely available or in use anymore, but the DNL Reader software and plugins is still distributed.

More Info Regarding File Extension Dnl
Anyone looking to view a .dnl file needs only to install a DNL reader application, which can be found in a number of locations on the web. The .dnl extension is for completed works only, and they cannot be edited by any piece of software, including the original Desktop Author application. This is of course a security feature to ensure that the author's works are not stolen by unscrupulous readers, or that work might be modified and then redistributed without permission. Files with a .dnl extension are, in general, harmless and may be deleted if they cause trouble. If they appear in a registry, it is perfectly acceptable to delete the extension from the registry without harm to the system, provided the user is uninterested in viewing Desktop Author creations.
It should be noted that .dnl extensions may also be used by another program, namely that which upgrades the firmware on the NetMod series of modems. NetMod is not a large company and their modems have not been widely used or distributed. In fact, NetMod modems are almost unavailable outside of the Middle East, Russia and Greece. However, if a user encounters .dnl files that do not appear to be from Desktop Author or other DNL reader applications, they should be cautious about proceeding with the deletion of any specific .dnl file. Any .dnl file related to a NetMod modem upgrade should be left where it is. Luckily, most users in the United States or Europe will not encounter any NetMod related upgrades, since NetMod modems are not sold in their area. Additionally, NetMod related firmware upgrade files have distinct names such as "upgradev4.dnl" or other names which make their purpose apparent. This allows them to be easily distinguished from the .dnl files created by Desktop Author, which generally are named after the books, brochures, photo albums and other documents they are related to.
Any user who is unsure what sort of .dnl file they have should leave it where it is. If a user wishes to be sure, they should download a free DNL Reader application and attempt to open the file. Anything produced by Desktop Author may be deleted without harm to the computer, and will be readable by a DNL Reader as a series of texts and/or images. Computers which have .dnl errors generally have them because they are unable to recognize and understand a .dnl file, something which may be corrected by the installation of a DNL Reader or Desktop Author. If this does not solve the problem, then the registry must be scanned and purged by a Registry Fixer. There are a great number of applications on the market today that can scan and repair a registry, and any one of them will be able to tell if the .dnl extension is no longer in use and may be removed.
